They perform various important functions in the context of the web, such as ensuring the proper functioning of the website and its features, monitoring sessions or pages visited, storing information about specific configurations related to users accessing the site, and storing preferences.

General Types

Depending on their characteristics, cookies can be distinguished into various types, which are grouped into general categories below to provide an initial understanding:

  • First-party or third-party: Despite the user’s device coming into contact with them while visiting the same site, third-party cookies are defined as such because they are stored by websites other than the one being visited. It is noted that the Data Controller has no control over the collection or subsequent use of the data of the Data Subject by third parties.
  • Session / Persistent: Unlike session cookies, which are deleted when the User closes their browser window, persistent cookies remain on the User’s device until they are manually deleted or reach their preset expiration date.
  • Technical: These cookies are necessary to enable the operation and usability of the site (for example, to allow the user to navigate between various pages of the site and activate various functions within them).
  • Performance: These cookies collect statistical and/or technical data related to the efficiency and accessibility of the site, such as the number of visitors, time spent on the site, and any error messages.
  • Functionality: These cookies allow for the optimization of the site’s usability by the User, remembering some settings related to their access (for example, language, login, browser, region).
  • Advertising: These cookies allow the site to use information collected on the User’s navigation to offer content and advertisements in line with the preferences and interests expressed up to that point.

In accordance with applicable law, your prior consent for the use of cookies is not always required. Specifically, such consent is not required for “technical cookies,” e.g., those used solely to carry out a communication over an electronic communications network, or strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user. In other words, cookies that are essential for the operation of a site.

Your prior consent is, however, required for non-anonymized “analytical”cookies and for profiling cookies, e.g., those that provide statistical analyses on website usage or create user profiles to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed during navigation.
