From 1973 to 1977 it was one of San Jose’s porn theaters. After a one-year return to showing classics, it returned in 1978 to a porn venue and remained that until it was shut down in 2000 by the county as a public nuisance. In its final years there was as much X-rated action among theater patrons as on the screen. After the county closed it and the property was sold, all the theater seats were torn out. Parviz isn’t naïve about how much it would cost to bring it back to life. “It’s going to take time and money, that’s for sure,” she says, adding that investors wanting to renovate the theater would be welcome.

“We weren’t sure how the people there would react,” recalled Roy Hirabayashi, who formed San Jose Taiko in 1973. “We looked Japanese, but we spoke like Americans. And yet the response was incredible.”. Roy and PJ have been spreading California sunshine for 37 years and have built a world-renowned teaching and performing organization that is a mainstay of the local arts community. Now, as they turn 60, they have decided it’s time to step down. “Sixty is a significant number, so this seemed like the right time to start a new chapter in our lives,” PJ said. They hope to perform together, give workshops, travel and perhaps do some consulting. “We’re not going anywhere,” she stressed.

But Saturday is the hometown party for Kensington resident Suhaila Salimpour, who teaches out of Berkeley’s Center for International Dance and graduated from Albany High (class of 1985). Her mother’s most consequent disciple, she honed and expanded Jamila’s teachings. Featuring dozens of performers hailing from across North America, East Asia, and Europe, the range of dancers participating at Saturday’s celebration reflects the international impact of the Salimpours. With her mother’s death at the age of 91 in December, what started as a one-off event to mark Bal Anat’s milestone turned into “a mini world tour for us,” Suhaila says. “When the belly dance world realized what we were doing it became this huge belly dance memorial and a lot of the original cast members are flying in from all over the world. This is the mother show in the birth place, and it’s really become a family reunion for the school and community that my mother established.”.
